The new year is like getting a new gift. Wrapped immaculately in a gift wrapper, tied uniformly in a shining ribbon. The gift tells us that we are special.
New gifts are so special that for the first few weeks, we even keep the wrap like a second gift. I remember that when I was a kid, every gift I got used to be special. The only hands holding the gift used to be mine – even at night while sleeping. At times in my dreams!
But time makes everything stale – including the special ones. Unless we consider it as special, care for it and keep it shining and memorable. But then, another gift arrives, and we are dazzled by it. Very few of us keep old gifts as special as the new ones.
Since the last time I reflected like this, another year passed by. If we live for about seventy years, 1.5% of our life has passed by in the last 365 days. What made our last year special? Professional work? Personal time? Travel? Making friends? Losing any special one? I lost my mom this year and with her death, I have lost a part of my childhood. It’s like having a big lock on the closet full of childhood gifts – torn, worn-out but full of emotions. Emotions make it special.
Technology allows us to archive our photo albums online or offline. Facebook creates a video collage of the days went by. As if to say – I was here with my friends, families, have created new memories. And it is special. Very very special.
In a winter evening on the last day of December, when 2019 – like new gift wrapped with colorful ribbons – is reaching us in few hours – with the video collage, closed closet of childhood, a nagging voice inside made me thinking – “Can you keep 2018 special? How can you make 2019 special?”
Wish you a great 2019 ahead! Make it special!
